Every child deserves the best chance and some need more support than others to access learning. At Geoffrey Field we find out what gets in the way of children learning and then work out the best way to get round these difficulties. Part of that is ensuring that children with extra difficulties, get what they need without losing out on what is going on in the classroom.  Getting the right things in place is the responsibility of the whole school community – parents and pupils working with the governing body, the head teacher, the special needs coordinator and all other members of staff, particularly class teachers and teaching assistants.

Children are seen as having special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty or disability which means they need special educational provision. A learning difficulty or disability is a difficulty in learning which is significantly more than most children have.  Special Educational provision is educational or training provision that is additional to, or different from, that which is made for others of the same age.

If you wish to discuss concerns you have about your child’s learning and you think they may have additional needs, you can contact Ms Choudhry (SENCO) via the office or speak to your child’s class teacher about it.

To give you regular information about how your child is doing in school, you will be invited in to see your child’s teacher for a parent consultation. This happens three times a year. If your child is being given extra support of some kind you will also contribute to what we call a ‘One Page Profile’ which lists what extra targets we feel may help your child. These may be to do with learning, communication, literacy, mathematics and behaviour and social skills and will also include targets that you want for them. This document records what is working well and what we would like to see change or improve. It also helps us to plan the actions we are going to take and what change we would expect to see. We then review these targets with you and update them as necessary.

Further information about special educational needs can be found on the school website. Look out for the SEND Policy, Information report and Local Offer.
